Visiting Southern Colorado

Summer sees southern Colorado communities from Cortez and Durango to Pueblo and Canon City taking to the Great Outdoors. Fun abounds in all directions, but parks and destinations like Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and Mesa Verde National Park are particularly enticing this time of year. In town, visitors can find a sense of local life through a wide range of special events, festivals, and other family-friendly fun.

Visitors to Monte Vista and Alamosa enjoy convenient access to Great Sand Dunes National Park. From hiking Mount Herald, horseback riding through several lake trails, and sledding the dunes in the 30-square-mile dune field to hands-on, educational experiences in the Discovery Room at the Visitor Center, the adventure opportunities are endless.

The arts are alive in Pueblo and the First Friday Art Walk is the pulse. Around 5 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, galleries and venues like Steel City Art Works showcase the wares of local artists, boasting an array of different media on display.

Colorado’s cool summer weather means fair season comes early – and the 2016 Colorado State Fair is the biggest one of them all. From August 26th through September 5th, it’s a celebration of all things Colorado, complete with concerts, rodeos, carnival rides, games, food, and and more.

Beer lovers won’t want to miss a chance to hop aboard the 2016 Durango Brew Train before it pulls out of the station on September 4th. Enjoy a scenic ride through Cascade Canyon on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and enjoy cold, adult beverages, live music, and more. Tickets are available now.

Still thirsty? The 2016 Harvest Beer Festival is September 10th at the Parque de Vida Pavilion in Cortez. It’s a gathering of local and regional brewers, where visitors can sip some suds while enjoying live music, local food offerings, and more. There will even be special activities just for the little ones. The pours start flowing at 1 p.m.

Taste some of Pueblo’s most prominent flavors, September 23rd through 25th, when the 22nd Annual Chile & Frijoles Festival takes over the Union Avenue Historic District. The festivities feature everything from music to arts and crafts to cooking competitions, beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
