Million Dollar Highway
The Million Dollar Highway is a section of U.S. Route 550 that travels from Silverton to Ouray. A part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, this section also runs along-side the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Running through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the Red Mountain Pass at 11,000 feet, you'll drive past steep cliffs, and through hairpin "S" curves on narrow lanes cutting into the mountains.
Although disputed, the origin of the name stems from costing a million dollars to build, during the 1920s. After an exciting day's drive, check into the local Best Western hotel in Ouray, the "Switzerland of America", and enjoy soaking in the natural indoor and outdoor hot springs pools. Have fun exploring southern Colorado.
