Most Popular Area Attractions

Box Canyon Falls Park

Located in Ouray, the "Switzerland of America", Box Canyon Falls Park features the breathtaking waterfall created from Canyon Creek. Take the short hike to the bridge above the falls and admire the beautiful views, or walk to the bottom to listen to the water rush into the canyon. Either way, it's a delight.

Bring along a snack and enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of the park gazebos or spend a few minutes in the Visitor Center to learn about the area's geology, wildlife, and plant life.  The park is a gem among southern Colorado's many scenic sites – don't miss it.

Four Corners Monument

A unique region to say the least, the Four Corners Monument marks the intersection of the only place in the United States where four states meet. While on the marker in your best "Twister-pose", you can be in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona at the same time.

The monument is maintained by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department and is also the boundary between the Navajo Nation and Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation. While visiting the Four Corners region, another must-see area attraction is Mesa Verde National Park.

Hovenweep National Monument

Located near southern Colorado’s four corners region, the Hovenweep National Monument is home to six prehistoric villages. The impressive dwellings can be found via short drive northwest of the town Cortez.

Once there, visitors are encouraged to embark on the Hovenweep trail system and view each of the six archeological sites, including the Cajon, Cutthroat Castle, Goodman Point, the Holly, Hackbeerry and Horseshoe, and the Square Tower. The Hovenweep visitor center offers further information on hiking trails, picnicking, and historic backstory.

Mesa Verde National Park

Established to "preserve the works of man," the Mesa Verde National Park features 600 cliff dwellings, which are some of the best preserved in America. The Ancestral Pueblo people lived in the dwellings from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300.

An additional 3,000 archeological sites including mesa top pueblos, farming terraces, towers and reservoirs are also found in the park. The park is located in the "archaeological heartland of the United States" in southwestern Colorado – just south of Cortez.

Montrose County Fair & Rodeo

For over 125 years, the Montrose County Fair and Rodeo has offered rodeo fun and western heritage for all southern Colorado visitors. The 10-day festivities include a Junior livestock show, CPRA Rodeo, ranch rodeo, horse shows and a tractor pull.

Kids enjoy competing in the junior shows including the dog agility, rabbit show, Working Ranch Show, sheep show, and goat show. Build a float for entry in the fair parade and have fun cruising through town. Submit your best chili for the Chili Cook-Off or arrive hungry for the pie-eating contest.

Montrose Regional Airport

Located north of Montrose, the Montrose Regional Airport has provided air travel service since 1988. The airport provides a variety of services for southern Colorado travelers, including Commercial flights to Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, Denver, Houston, and Chicago, are available via American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines.

As the closest airport to Telluride, many passengers fly into the airport to make their way to Telluride Ski Resort, for fun on the ski slopes. The Jetway Cafe, the gift shop, rental car agencies, and convenient parking, are additional services available at the airport.

Yucca House National Monument

Located in the southern region of Colorado, the Yucca House National Monument is dedicated to preserving one of the world’s largest archeological sites. The site can be found just outside of the southern town of Cortez and west of the Mesa Verde National Park.

Once there, visitors can explore the Puebloan mounds – the “Lower House” and “Upper House” – both combining to form the Yucca House. Lending to the excellent scenery, the Yucca House is found at the base of Sleeping Ute Mountain in the Montezuma Valley.
