Visiting Southern Colorado & Four Corners
A visit to southern Colorado yields virtually limitless opportunities for outdoor fun in unmatched mountain terrain – and fall weather is mild enough for explorations of the region’s numerous state parks and national parks. When it finally gets cold enough for snow, places like the beautiful Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park are ideal for skiing, snowshoeing, and more.
There’s still time to embark on a driving tour of the Centennial State’s quirky, historic, and scenic southern region. West of Buena Vista, peak fall foliage may have come and gone in the San Isabel National Forest, but the remaining golden leaves and white bark of some of the oldest and tallest aspens in the state are still a striking sight to behold against the Collegiate Peaks backdrop.
The arts are alive in Pueblo and one only need peruse the First Friday Art Walk for proof. On the first Friday of every month downtown pueblo shops, galleries, and venues open up to showcase local artists, musicians, and performers. Things usually get started around 5 p.m.
After exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park, visitors to Monte Vista and Alamosa can become immersed in an abundance of holiday cheer at the 2016 Alamosa Christmas Light Parade on December 18th, when lighted floats, marching bands, and community luminaries make their way through the streets of downtown Alamosa.
As winter sets in, Alamosa continues to be a destination for a variety of fun activities. From January 29th through 31st, the town is overtaken by the 2016 Alamosa Ice Fest & Rio Frio 5K. Don’t miss the Faux Snowman Building Contest, Fire & Ice Bonfire, live music, or the 5K run. It’s a full weekend of fun with a little something for everyone in the family.
To the southwest, the people of Durango celebrate winter with a longstanding tradition. The 39th Annual SnowDown is January 27th through 31st, promising costume parties, a parade, fireworks, and many more special events.
